I consider rosehip oil to be a miraculous ingredient in a skin cream. It contains so many powerful properties that can regenerate skin and fight the signs of aging. I credit it for ridding my skin of acne scarring and keeping my 35 year old face wrinkle-free.

Rosehip, not surprisingly, comes from the rose. After the delicate petals of the flower have fallen off, the bud becomes impregnated with seeds and swells into a beautiful red bulb called the rosehip. The oil is cold-pressed from the seeds contained within. Most of this nutritious oil comes from the Andes mountains, where a pink wild rose species called rosa rubiginosa grows.

Rosehip oil started getting attention after a study was published out of  San Marcos University, Lima, Peru in 1988. 180 patients suffering from severe scarring and premature aging used the oil on their skin over a period of two years and the results were astonishing – scars were reduced, aging skin was rejuvenated and tone and colour improved.

Rosehip contains many beneficial components but the most powerful is its high level of all-trans retinoic acid (tretinoin), a derivative of vitamin A (retinol).  Tretinoin is a widely researched ingredient that is used by dermatologists to treat acne and photo-aging and is used to reduce stretch marks by increasing collagen production in the dermis. Rosehip oil also contains high levels of unsaturated essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6), namely oleic (15-20%), linoleic (44-50%) and linolenic (30-35%). These fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and are responsible for providing deep hydration. Rosehips are also one of the highest natural sources of vitamin C , a powerful anti-oxidant that fights free-radical damage.

Rosehip oil is an important ingredient in any skin cream. Not only does it work wonders for sun-damaged, scarred and aging skin, but it also helps strengthen broken capillaries and minimize pores.  Many organic companies have added this ingredient to their formulas – you will find it listed as rosa rubginosa or rosa moschata. At Cocoon Apothecary, we use certified organic  rosehip oil in our Rosey Cheeks Facial Cream.
